A recent study was published by Dr. Kimon Divaris from the Pediatric Dentistry Department  at the University of North Carolina. The study confirms the long-standing hypothesis that patients may be genetically predisposed to developing periodontitis.

Click here for more information on the study.

Periodontitis is the advanced form of gum disease.  When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontitis.  Below are the symptoms of gum disease.

  • Gums that bleed during and after tooth brushing
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
  • Receding gums
  • Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together upon biting down, or in the fit of partial dentures.
